Chch quake: 25 feb

The fourth day since the huge quake, has only started. And the death toll now stands at 103.

Rescue teams from New Zealand, New South Wales, Japan, Singapore, China, Taiwan, America and Britain, searched all night through the rubble in Christchurch CBD, but no more survivors have been found. All together, 70 survivors have been pulled out, but no one in the last 36 hours…

The coroner, Sue Johnson, said yesterday in a press meeting, that it will take time to identify all of the dead. She urged people who have missing family or friends, to bring them information about the missing people, such as tattoes, piercings, scars, birthmarks, and even dental records and special jewellry that their missing person might have been wearing. Once a person has been identified, he/she will be released from the morgue.

Four diseased have been named by the police, and among them…two babies, 9 and 5 months old.

The suburbs Redcliff and Sumner, was evacuated yesterday, because the surrounding cliffs are dangerously unstable.

In the midst of all this tragedy, there are people, trying to scam other people. Some people are going through houses and businesses in Christchurch to find valuables they can sell. Other people are impersonating evacuation team members in order to get to the evacuated houses. And scams are also all over internet, asking people to donate money for the quake victims.

Three quarters of the city now have power, and 50% of the water has been restored, not a minute too late, as the water supplies were running out. Grocery stores can’t restock their shelves and are starting to urge people to not stock up too much, in consideration to others. And gas stations are running out of gas…

Around 450 people are now staying in welfare stations. It is hard to say how many are totally without a home. Temporary accommodation is being set up, and New Zealanders around the country are offering short term stay in their homes to the victims.

One for all, and all for one.
